Setting Up a ResMed S9 CPAP Machine
General guidance on setting up a ResMed S9 machine — what you can safely check yourself, and what to leave to your prescriber.
Read at your pace. Use this guide to form questions, not as a substitute for professional medical advice.

The ResMed S9 is an older ResMed CPAP series still in use by some patients. This guide covers general, non-prescriptive setup steps — connecting the machine and preparing it for use — not pressure settings, which should only be changed by, or under the direction of, your prescriber.
Before you start
- Confirm you have your prescription details on hand, or that the team has already configured the machine to your prescription at delivery.
- Place the machine on a firm, flat surface below head height, near a power outlet.
General setup steps
- Connect the power supply to the machine and to the wall outlet.
- Attach the air tubing to the air outlet on the machine.
- Fill the humidifier chamber (if your unit has one) with distilled or clean water, up to the marked fill line, and reinsert it into the machine.
- Attach your mask to the other end of the tubing, following your mask's own fitting instructions.
- Turn the machine on and check that air flows through the mask before putting it on.
What not to do yourself
- Do not change your prescribed pressure setting. If the pressure feels wrong — too strong, too weak, or uncomfortable — that's a sign to speak with your prescriber or the team, not to adjust it yourself. See our guide on CPAP pressure problems for what those signs can mean.
- Do not attempt clinical mode changes (e.g., switching between fixed and Auto modes) without your prescriber's direction — these settings are chosen based on your diagnosis.
Ongoing care
Regular cleaning of the mask, tubing, and humidifier chamber matters for hygiene and machine longevity — see our guide on common CPAP cleaning mistakes.
If you need help
If you're setting up a machine bought or rented through CPAP Pakistan and something isn't working as expected, contact the team rather than troubleshooting the pressure settings yourself — they can talk you through the specific unit and confirm it matches your prescription.
