Why Does My CPAP Mask Smell Bad?
Common causes of CPAP mask odour and how to get rid of it with a simple cleaning routine.
Read at your pace. Use this guide to form questions, not as a substitute for professional medical advice.

A CPAP mask sits against your skin every night, so odour usually has a straightforward, fixable cause rather than something wrong with the mask itself.
Common causes
- Skin oils and sweat building up in the silicone cushion over time.
- Moisture left in the mask or tubing after use, which can encourage odour-causing buildup if the mask isn't fully dried before its next use.
- Infrequent washing — a mask cushion in daily contact with your face needs more frequent cleaning than many people expect.
- A cushion nearing the end of its usable life — silicone can absorb odour over time in a way that washing no longer fully resolves; see signs you need a new mask cushion.
A simple routine to reduce odour
- Wipe the cushion with a damp cloth or mild soap daily.
- Wash the full mask (cushion, frame, headgear straps where washable) weekly with mild soap and water — avoid harsh detergents, which can degrade silicone faster.
- Let it air-dry fully before your next use, ideally somewhere with airflow rather than a closed bathroom.
- Don't share your mask, and keep it away from other people's skincare products, which can also transfer odour or residue.
If the smell persists despite regular cleaning
That's usually a sign the cushion has reached the end of its useful life rather than a cleaning problem — see signs you need a new mask cushion, or ask the CPAP Pakistan team about a replacement — see CPAP accessories.
