Why Does My CPAP Feel Like It's Not Giving Me Enough Air?
Common, non-alarming reasons a CPAP can feel like it's under-delivering air, and when to get it checked.
Read at your pace. Use this guide to form questions, not as a substitute for professional medical advice.

Feeling like your CPAP isn't giving you enough air can be unsettling, especially early in therapy. Most of the time this sensation has a practical explanation rather than a fault with the machine itself — but it's worth checking rather than ignoring if it continues.
Common, practical reasons
- Mask leak. Air escaping around the mask seal reduces the air actually reaching you, even though the machine is running correctly. Check the mask fit and cushion condition — see signs you need a new mask cushion.
- Adjustment period. Many new CPAP users feel unusual sensations in the first days or weeks as they adjust to positive pressure. This tends to ease as you get used to therapy.
- Blocked or kinked tubing. A bent or obstructed hose restricts airflow — check that the full length of the tube is clear.
- Wrong mask type for how you breathe. A nasal mask won't deliver air properly if you breathe through your mouth at night — see how to choose a CPAP mask.
When it may relate to your pressure setting
If mask fit, tubing, and adjustment period don't explain it, the sensation can sometimes relate to how your pressure setting responds to your breathing pattern. This is not something to diagnose or fix yourself — see our guide on CPAP pressure problems for the signs worth raising with a prescriber, and do not change your pressure setting on your own in response to this feeling.
What to check before contacting the team
- Is the mask sealing properly, with no obvious leak?
- Is the tubing fully connected at both ends and free of kinks?
- Is the filter clean (a blocked filter restricts airflow) — see our filter guide for disposable vs. reusable CPAP filters?
- Has this been happening since you started therapy, or is it new?
If you've checked the practical basics and the feeling persists, contact your prescriber or the CPAP Pakistan team to have the setup reviewed.
