Why Am I More Tired After Using CPAP?

Feeling more tired after starting CPAP is common early on. Here's what commonly contributes to it, and when to raise it with your prescriber.

Feeling more tired rather than less after starting CPAP can feel discouraging — and it's a common early experience, not a sign that CPAP therapy doesn't work for you.

Why this can happen early in therapy

  • Your body is adjusting. Sleeping with a mask and airflow is a big change. Some people sleep less soundly in the first days or weeks simply because it's unfamiliar.
  • Interrupted sleep from mask or leak issues. Frequent mask adjustments, leaks, or discomfort during the night reduce sleep quality even while the therapy itself is working.
  • Catching up on years of poor sleep. If sleep apnea went untreated for a while, it can take time for your body's sleep patterns to recover, even with effective therapy.
  • The setup may not be quite right yet — mask fit, humidity level, or pressure comfort settings often need small adjustments in the first weeks.

What can help

  1. Give it time. Many people report the tiredness easing over 2–4 weeks as they adjust, but this varies person to person.
  2. Check mask fit and comfort — see how to choose a CPAP mask and why a mask cushion might need replacing.
  3. Keep the machine clean — a dirty mask, filter, or hose can affect comfort and therapore sleep quality; see common cleaning mistakes.
  4. Track how you're sleeping — note whether you're removing the mask overnight, how many hours you're actually wearing it, and any discomfort, so you have specifics to discuss.

When to speak with your prescriber

If tiredness continues well beyond the initial adjustment period, or you notice new symptoms, that's worth raising with your prescriber rather than assuming it will resolve on its own — persistent daytime tiredness despite CPAP use can sometimes mean the pressure setting or mask fit needs review, which is a clinical decision, not something to self-adjust.

If you bought or rented your machine through CPAP Pakistan, the team can also help check that the machine and mask are set up as intended.
